The Profile
The rugby career behind the headlines.
Jamie Roberts earned ninety four caps for Wales during the era that included a Grand Slam and a World Cup semi final. He was the defining inside centre of that Welsh period, a physically dominant ball carrier who made the attacking lines and angles work for the outside backs around him. His partnership with Jonathan Davies in the Welsh midfield defined a chapter of Welsh rugby.
He was the man of the series for the 2009 British and Irish Lions tour to South Africa, widely considered one of the best performances by an inside centre in a losing Lions cause. He played in three Lions series overall, which puts him in an elite club within British and Irish rugby history.
Alongside the rugby, he qualified as a medical doctor during his playing career, which is the kind of detail that tells you all you need to know about his discipline and preparation. Post-playing he has worked as a pundit, a doctor, and a speaker, and his events combine rugby analysis with the discipline perspective his medical training brings.
“Playing inside centre for Wales and being a doctor simultaneously taught me the same lesson twice. You do the work, you trust the preparation, you do not panic when someone is on the floor in front of you.”
