The Profile
James's story, told with respect to the facts.
James Collins spent fifteen years in the Premier League playing for Cardiff, West Ham, and Aston Villa, with the West Ham years in particular defining his career. He played in the 2006 FA Cup final side, was a fixture in the Wales squad for more than a decade, and became one of the most popular figures at West Ham during his time at the club.
His playing style was uncompromising, which is the usual football word for a centre back who made you earn every goal you scored. He is not remembered for his ball playing so much as for the commitment he brought to every game, which in the era of the big Premier League centre backs was exactly what clubs wanted from that position.
Post-retirement, he has become a regular on the after-dinner circuit and a pundit for Welsh broadcasters. The West Ham era stories are the ones everyone wants to hear and he tells them well.
“I was the one who cleared the lines so the midfielders could get the credit. That is how I played and that is how I remember the career.”
