Daley Thompson

Double Olympic decathlon champion. World record holder four times over. The man who made Britain believe the decathlon was ours.

The most complete British athlete of his era.

Francis Morgan Ayodele Thompson did not believe in doing things by halves. The decathlon is ten events across two days, the most brutal test in athletics, and for almost a decade he owned it completely. Two Olympic golds in 1980 and 1984. Four world records. A European and Commonwealth title collection that would take most athletes three careers to accumulate.

The Los Angeles 1984 final is the one most people remember. He went into the final event, the 1500m, needing to run a specific time to break the world record. He missed the record by a single point on the original scoring, and then the scoring was retrospectively recalculated and the record was his after all. He was typically laconic about the whole thing. He had already won the gold, which was the part that mattered.

What made Daley different was the swagger. He whistled the national anthem during his medal ceremony because he thought the arrangement was terrible. He trained in Crystal Palace when the facility was unheated and it was easier to see your breath than the finish line. He beat rivals who had every advantage by refusing to acknowledge any of them. His training notebooks from the 1980s are still cited by coaches as a template for what total self-belief looks like on a page.

Post-athletics, he has moved carefully. Some punditry, some charity work, quiet influence on British athletics development. He speaks rarely in public, which is part of why the room listens when he does.

“The decathlon does not forgive anything. You miss a throw, you get back up. You fall in the hurdles, you keep running. That's the whole sport.”
