The Profile
Ali's story, told with respect to the facts.
Ally McCoist scored more goals for Rangers than any player in the club's history. He won nine Scottish league titles. He was a Scotland international for fourteen years. None of which has anything to do with why he is currently more famous than he was during his playing days.
The TNT Sports Champions League coverage, paired with Darren Fletcher, has become appointment viewing for British football fans because McCoist brings something that modern punditry rarely does: genuine, ungovernable enthusiasm. When a goal goes in, McCoist shouts. When a tackle lands, he winces. When a manager makes a baffling substitution, he calls it baffling. He refuses to sand down his reactions for the studio, and it has become his defining quality.
He has done everything that a retired footballer is supposed to do, including managing Rangers during one of the club's most difficult periods. He has done some things that retired footballers are not supposed to do, including a spell on A Question Of Sport and a starring role as himself in Question Time. He was in the early 1990s and then again in the early 2020s, somehow, one of the most-liked people in British football.
The Steam audience warmed to him in the way most rooms do. He tells stories like someone who has just remembered the punchline, rediscovered it, and is still delighted that it works.
“I have scored more goals at Ibrox than at Hampden, and I am not sure whether that's a compliment to one or a criticism of the other.”

Ali McCoist at Steam
Ally appeared at Steam in January 2025 alongside Alan Brazil, and the room essentially turned into two hours of stories from the 1980s Scottish league that even the most football-agnostic guests were crying with laughter at by the end.
