The afternoon
Forty years of stand up, still one of the funniest in the business.
Mick Miller is the comic's comedian, which is industry shorthand for the working comedian who has been making other working comedians laugh for forty years. He is not the household name. He is the act that household names cite as an influence. When you mention him to someone who knows British comedy from the 1980s and 1990s, the reaction is always the same. They immediately smile.
The act is built on observational material honed in a long career on the northern club circuit, the working men's clubs, the cruise ships, the comedy clubs that most touring stand ups pass through once and never return to. Miller has been doing it continuously since before most of the current Mock The Week roster were born.
An evening at Steam is an opportunity to see him work a proper room. This is not television. This is the format he has spent four decades getting right. Dinner first, a full comedy set second, drinks and conversation after. The running time is flexible because it depends on how good the room is on the night, and Steam audiences have a history of being the kind of room that keeps a comedian going for an extra twenty minutes.
